Our Story

2010

We first started growing vegetables on our Baltimore City rooftop.  We were concerned about where our food came from and the chemicals involved in it’s production, so we decided to grow our own.

2011

We soon needed more growing space, and expanded to in-ground farming. We farm using organic polyculture agricultural practices and strive to understand the intricate interplay of plants and animals so we can produce food without the use of harsh chemicals. We use certified organic, open-pollinated, non-genetically modified seeds and heirloom varieties.  This results in tastier, more nutritious food for us and ethical stewardship for Earth.

2012

We sold our goods at farmers markets and created a csa – community supported agriculture – system by which customers purchase a share of weekly produce, supporting the farming efforts.

We began offering delivery service to our customers.

2013

We opened a market, RoofTop Hot, named after the hot rooftop where our farming began.  Our shop in Historic Highlandtown is located above the venerable Venice Tavern.

We focus on sourcing from local growers, makers, and manufacturers, which helps conscious consumers, local economy, and local agriculture.  We want to promote local businesses as well as support local environmental and economic sustainability.

2015

We began a community composting service utilizing the farm’s vermiculture worm farming practice to create
soil-nourishing compost from
food scraps and would-be waste.

We now provide a composting service to the greater Baltimore area.

2016

We began offering refrigerated wholesale and fulfillment transportation services to other local business, servicing the metro Baltimore, metro DC, and metro Philadelphia areas.

Present

We are teaching our 2nd generation farmer the importance of community, service, and sustainability.

Our customers now have the ability to order groceries online for home delivery with EBT/SNAP funds.

RoofTop Hot continues to keep the focus local, offering fair prices, great quality and customer service.  We strive to help support a thriving and more equitable community.
